Today I received an email from Dick Beith confirming he will be bringing his new 36hp VW Comp Coupe to World of Speed. As you have seen from watching the black & white Bonneville video of Dicks bugs 1961 world record run and reading the stories in Hot VW's over the years, Dick is the 'Godfather' of all Volkswagen land speed racing and was the first VW racer in any type of race to ever set a world record. That record was set fifty years ago and the World of Speed coming up next week marks the fiftieth (50th) annivesary of Dicks effort.
Dick will be driving his new 36hp Comp Coupe in which he hopes to beat his own all time 36hp record of 129 miles per hour. The engine will be a 36hp displacing 1450 cc's determined by a Porsche crank and rods and using highly modified 36hp single port heads. It will be supercharged using an Eaton Supercharger from a Ford Thunderbird combined with a Chevrolet fuel injection ignition/computer system, progressive Nitrous Oxide equipped and a homebuilt water to air intercooler. The engine will feature 'some' watercooling of an undisclosed nature and will compete in the USFRA/SCTA/BNI fuel competition coupe category running on the full three mile course.
The current SCTA record is 148 mph [H Blown Fuel Coupe] and it is Dicks goal to beat that record using a 36hp based powerplant in his highly modified 1968 Volkswagen bug sedan. I would invite everyone who can find their way to Bonneville between this coming Wed the 15th and Sat the 18th, to come meet the legend and watch his amazing Volkswagen make it's intitial speed runs.
Hope to see everyone their. Until then, may the Speed be with you............
