Volks Culture

Another BIG Volks Culture cruise

I was reading the paper and came across the ten best drives in Australia which gave me the inspiration for what will be a fantastic cruise for early next year. Many of you came on The Big Blue cruise to the Blue Mountains in January. Make way for The Big Snowy, cruise to the Snowy Mountains in January 2013 - weekend of 26-27.

I'd like to gauge interest and get some ideas for interesting places to stop along the way. Also, this will obviously be a multi-day cruise, so best places to stay/camp along the way? Should this be two nights away or one night?

Let's make this a good one. Got an idea? Put it on the table.

Currently our two route options are as follows:

Route Option 1 - (map link)

Sydney - Canberra (286km 3:14)

Canberra - Cooma (116km 1:28)

Cooma - Adaminaby (51.6km 0:38)

Adaminaby - Tumut (129km 1:33)

Tumut - Bowral (294km 3:18)

Bowral - Sydney (119km 1:25)

Total 996km, 11:35

Route Option 2 (map link)

Sydney - Canberra (286km 3:14)

Canberra - Cooma (116km 1:28)

Cooma - Jindabyne (62.5km 0:49)

Jindabyne - Thredbo (33.8km 0:29)

Thredbo - Tumut (249km 3:23)

Tumut - Bowral (294km 3:18)

Bowral - Sydney (119km 1:25)

Total 1,157km 13:55

And just in case you forgot the last one...

Hey Ash, as long as there's a little time to flick a fly, I'm up for any of it. Cheers, Mark

Sounds like great cruise. We'd be camping with a tent.

Sounds good Ash, I'll be there and there's likely to be atleast another 2 T3's coming along with my T3.

OK. So what is formulating so far could be:

Day 1 (Friday Jan 25) Sydney to Jindabyne
Distance: 464km
On road for: 5:30 hrs
Leave Sydney: 9am (leave time for people to travel to Sydney etc.)
Arrive Jindabyne: 4:30pm (inc. 2 hours stopping time)

Day 2 (Saturday Jan 26) Jindabyne to Tumut
Distance: 283km
On road for: 4 hrs
Leave Jindabyne: 9am
Arrive Tumut: 4pm (inc. 3 hours site seeing along the way)

Day 3 (Sunday Jan 27) Tumut to Sydney
Distance: 415km
On road for: 4:45 hrs
Leave Tumut: 9am
Arrive Sydney:4pm (inc. 2:15 site seeing)

Taking 3 days we will get a little more time to spend in places like Thredbo, Jindabyne and Tumut. Also, people coming from Sydney after work on Friday could drive to Canberra Friday night, and then meet up with the convoy in Jindabyne Saturday morning. Thoughts?

Hey Andy. Cooma is a logical place for the first night. My suggestion would be to stay at a place that offers both camping and cabins, or people can stay at a local hotel if they need a little luxury...Would be great to get a bit of community night life happening either way.

Route 2 has sealed roads all the way, but just to make sure I will be taking off with the kids for a weekend to check the entire route out beforehand. Route 2 is probably my preference here.

We went to Jindabyne for a couple of nights last January with my folks. Going home we did Route 1 from Cooma to Gundagai via Adaminiby, Talbingo and Tumut and it's a challenging drive. Great roads and I commented then that it was perfect for cruising in VWs. But with aircon and power steering it was still a tiring drive.

Route 2 looks even more exciting but what are the roads like? If they aren't tar it could be very....."interesting".

I'd love to do this but where exactly are you thinking of stopping? Cooma would probably be a good idea so you're ready for the next day's drive. And are we camping or staying in cabins/motels?

If you enjoy hanging out at Volks Culture, feed the meter every so often to help us keep it running. Cheers!
