Company installs 100 vehicles in 7,000 square meter premises

Hannover, March 29, 2012. Hardly any other automobile has such a high cult factor as the Volkswagen Bus. Today, 65 years after its first appearance, it stars in cinema films and commercials and stands – more than any other vehicle – for freedom, travel and fun. At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles this legendary VW Bus has its own department dedicated to preserving its heritage: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimers. Formed in 2007, the team has expanded fast over the five intervening years. Not only have the experts purchased and restored about 100 vehicles – from now on, they are offering the restoration of historic Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles ex works for external customers, inclusive of detailed documentation.

For this purpose, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimers moved to a new building in Hannover at the beginning of this year. An area of approximately 7,000 square meters now not only accommodates the historical treasures, but also houses a machine park which includes everything from a sheet metal bending bench, lathes and milling machines to its own paint shop. The department now has a staff of 13, from mechanics to a technology historian and an event planner.

Owners of a historic Volkswagen Commercial vehicle can now have it restored here, at its place of origin. No matter whether a full or partial restoration is required, or a Bus is simply to be made roadworthy, the 'Bulli' workshop team will undertake any assignment. Paint renovation or an inspection is also possible. The staff talk through all personal restoration wishes with the customer before preparing an individually tailored offer.

The unique feature: only here does the customer receive certificated ex works restoration. In addition, for each customer the team of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimers provides comprehensive documentation of the restoration of the vehicle, in which every step is photographically documented and described in detail. Thus the work performed by the specialists from Hannover is recorded for posterity, and customers can leaf through their folder whenever they wish. Some of the replacement parts needed when working on oldtimers are even taken from Volkswagen's original stock.

High fives as Volkswagen triumphs at 2011 Australia’s Best Car Awards

Volkswagen has recorded one of its strongest performances to date taking out five category wins at this year’s Australia’s Best Car Awards.

The remarkable Polo 66TDI continues its winning streak claiming the ‘Best Light Car over $20,000’ for the second consecutive year.

The Volkswagen Golf 90TSI has also been recognised in the small car segment winning the title of ‘Best Small Car under $35,000’.

In the medium car segment, the new Jetta 118TSI was rated the best under $50,000, while Volkswagen’s two SUV’s, the new Tiguan 103TDI and its big brother, the Touareg V6 TDI, have each been awarded ‘Best SUV under $40,000’ and ‘Best Luxury SUV over $60,000’ respectively.

Anke Koeckler, Volkswagen Group Australia’s Managing Director, was honoured to receive these accolades: “2011 has been huge for Volkswagen, with awards such as these, it is really the perfect conclusion to what has been an overwhelmingly positive year.

The Volkswagen Jetta was praised for the new model for being bigger, cheaper and better equipped than its predecessor.

“With well-above average scores in most areas, the new Jetta once again convinced ABC judges it deserved the Best Medium Car under $50,000 title.”

While the Tiguan also held onto its title from last year, with its mid-life refresh further strengthening its hold on the crown.

Volkswagen has travelled to the largest GTI Meet in the world at Wörthersee with an entire fleet of new models, concept cars and accessory highlights. After revealing the new Golf GTI Edition 35 in a world debut, the company that invented the GTI will be pulling the veils off some other secret projects of a sporty nature: Volkswagen is presenting the Golf R Cabriolet as a concept car with 270 PS of power and a top speed of 250 km/h; it is a fascinating thought experiment in cabrio dynamics. This powerful cabrio also demonstrates the inexhaustible potential of the Golf. But there is more news as well: other concept cars such as the Golf R Concept and the latest original accessories will make the GTI Meet (until 4 June) a mecca for every Volkswagen fan.

Golf R Cabriolet concept: Volkswagen recently introduced the new Golf Cabriolet, and the designers and engineers of Volkswagen R GmbH have already come up with an extremely sporty variant of this model: the Golf R Cabriolet Concept. Like its closed top counterpart, the 199 kW / 270 PS Cabriolet concept races to the 100 km/h mark in less than six seconds. Their top speeds are also identical at 250 km/h. This makes the R Cabriolet the fastest open-top Golf ever. Even more impressive, however, is the engines tremendous torque 350 Newton metres from a low 2,500 rpm make this cabriolet an ideal cruiser.

Like the closed-top Golf R, the cabriolet was lowered by 25mm via a sport chassis. A 17-inch brake system with internally ventilated discs at all wheels and blue painted high-performance brake callipers (including Rlogo) enables impressive deceleration values. Making contact to the road surface on the Golf R Cabriolet Concept are 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels with size 235 tyres.

Naturally, the Golf R Cabriolet Concept also presents an especially sporty interior concept. Motorsport shell seats in dark blue carbon leather, combined with high-end Nappa leather in Pure Grey, set the tone here. The backs of the shell seats are painted in luxurious black piano paint. Upholstery piping and decorative seams provide for colour contrast. Carbon accents emphasise the concepts technical-sporty character. The sand-blasted aluminium door sill plates with black piano paint inlays display finely crafted workmanship.

Golf R Concept: Two variations of the Golf R Concept are also making strong visual statements at Wörthersee. Like the classic Golf R and the R Cabriolet on display at the meet, the two Golf R Concepts are also powered by a 2.0 litre turbo engine with the mentioned 199 kW / 270 PS, which is as powerful as it is efficient.

The first version of the Golf R Concept attracts attention with mid-tone Velvet Grey Metallic exterior, polished 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels, orange painted brake callipers and carbon mirror caps.

The driver and front passenger have the pleasure of sitting on perfectly ergonomic motorsport shell seats. Their outer segments are upholstered in black Nappa leather with anthracite-coloured Nappa leather (Light Anthracite) used towards the inner surfaces in the area of the lateral seat supports and towards the head section. The cross-stitched centre panels of the seat and seatback gets an even lighter Nappa leather (Pure Grey). The back shell glistens in black piano paint. The piping on the side sections of the seat and head section provide a fine contrast: the orange of the brake callipers is repeated here. Meanwhile, interior accents match the look of the mirror caps: carbon. The same material is also used for the steering wheel, gear shift lever and the door sill plates. Black piano paint characterises the panels behind the inside door handles, the trim of the window controls and the trim of the gear shift grip.

The second model of the Golf R Concept is painted in the sophisticated Aplomb Blue. The 19-inch Glendale wheels that are new to the Golf line-up shine in Brilliant Silver. Once again, the exterior mirror caps, various interior accents and the door sill plates are made of carbon.

Parts of the back shells of the motorsport shell seats also feature carbon. Black Nappa leather covers the outer areas of the seat and seatback surfaces. Meanwhile, the ridge of the seats a continuous stripe that runs along the lateral seat and back supports consists of blue leather. The sport leather steering wheels inner segments and grip recesses were upholstered in carbon leather; characteristic of this lightweight material is its woven structure. Even the floor mats have a carbon look. The decorative seams here, as in the area of the parking brake lever, are styled in blue.

Volkswagen Zubehr GmbH: At the 30th GTI Meet, the accessories company is not only showing complete vehicles, but also lifestyle articles and vehicle accessories. Available in the GTI Shop at the Volkswagen exhibit is the entire new GTI Collection of sporty shirts, coats, jeans, childrens articles and accessories. And that is not all: the 35 anniversary of the Golf GTI was reason enough to design a commemorative series: the GTI Edition 35 T-Shirt Collection with the best advertising motifs over the 35 years of the GTI.

Classic accessories on display at Wörthersee include various alloy wheels (up to 21-inch in size). “We have invited you to join us here in Olbia to announce Volkswagen’s entry in the World Rally Championship starting in 2013.” – These were the words used by Volkswagen Management Board Member Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg as he declared Volkswagen’s entry into the most versatile of the four automobile world championships (World Rally Championship, WRC). In front of 200 journalists he unveiled the concept of the Polo R WRC, the car with which Volkswagen will compete from 2013 onwards, together with Luca de Meo, Head of Marketing of Volkswagen AG, and Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. Luca de Meo: “Almost exactly two years ago, in May 2009, the most recent model of the Polo was presented here in Sardinia. Today we are proud to show you the hottest Polo of all time – the Polo R WRC.” For Kris Nissen and his team the World Rally Championship entry marks a new commitment. “We look forward to this new challenge and are working on this project with the same passion with which we won the Dakar Rally in the past three years,” said Kris Nissen.

After three consecutive victories at the Dakar Rally, Volkswagen has set itself new aims in top-calibre sport. With three car corporations currently involved in the championship and global media coverage, the WRC offers an attractive, highly competitive environment for Volkswagen. By 2013 the Wolfsburg-based brand will develop a near-300-hp rally vehicle with a 1.6-litre TSI engine and four-wheel drive based on the Polo.

Universal technological challenge, new rules

The World Rally Championship offers the most diverse technological challenge in worldwide car racing to the manufacturers involved. Various types of ground have to be considered during the concept design of a WRC vehicle such as all manner of gravel, scree, tarmac, ice, snow and mud. The calendar this season features 13 WRC rounds on four different continents. Hence a world rally car has to function in extremely different climatic conditions, from the blazing heat of South America to the icy ride in Scandinavia.

In addition, new technical rules have come into effect in the WRC this year. For the first time, engines with a maximum displacement of 1,600 cc, direct injection and turbochargers are prescribed.

“The new Technical Regulations of the World Rally Championship are an ideal fit for Volkswagen’s philosophy with respect to the development of production vehicles,” says Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Management Board of the Volkswagen Brand, Development Division. “Downsizing, high efficiency and reliability are top priorities for our customers. The timing of the WRC debut is optimal for Volkswagen. The big task of engineering a vehicle that is competitive and capable of winning at a large number of challenges holds great appeal for us.”

Proven squad, new aims: Volkswagen Motorsport’s factory commitment

Volkswagen will prepare and enter the Polo R WRC as a factory commitment. In doing so, the Wolfsburg-based squad can build on structures which have been established over the past few years. The World Rally Championship is a new ambitious aim for the team that has won the “Dakar” in the past three years. “We can draw on an experienced and proven squad which has done an outstanding job in top-calibre sport in the past few years,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “Even though the WRC is new territory for us and involves learning in many areas the team already meets some important prerequisites now as it brings an unwavering professional attitude and resolve to deliver absolute perfection to this commitment.”

Volkswagen in the WRC: a success story

Volkswagen looks back on a small yet impressive rally tradition. Production-based vehicles from Wolfsburg celebrated rally racing successes in the middle end of the 1980s. The most important one: In 1986 the Swede Kenneth Eriksson and his German co-driver Peter Diekmann in the Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V claimed the world champion’s title in the newly incepted Group A. In addition, Volkswagen vigorously promoted young rally talent through the Golf Rally Cup. The fielding of the Volkswagen Polo R WRC from 2013 onwards closes the loop: Today’s WRC vehicles are still based on the philosophy of the Group A introduced back then, which enables rally sport to be conducted with vehicles based on production models.

Golf blue-e-motion to be driven by E-motor with maximum power of 85 kW

With the Golf blue-e-motion the purely electrically powered version of the most successful European car ever built – Volkswagen is forging new ties to the era of electric mobility. The five-door and five-seat version of the concept car is silently driven by an electric motor integrated in the front engine compartment with a maximum power of 85 kW and a continuous power output of 50 kW. Like all electric motors, the one in the Golf also delivers a very high maximum torque from a stop (270 Newton-metres). The result: more fun in zero-emissions driving. The electricity for powering the electric motor is stored in a lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 26.5 kilowatt-hours.

Today, using a lithium-ion battery, driving ranges of up to 150 kilometres can be realised in the front-wheel drive Golf blue-e-motion; the specific range depends on driving style and other factors (such as use of the air conditioning and heating system). At the car’s production launch, Volkswagen will announce final driving range data of the production version, which is expected to be significantly improved with the battery technology used then. In many locales, the needs of commuters are already met by a distance of 150 kilometres. Take Germany for example: According to the German Federal Statistical Office, 6 of every 10 people in the workforce commute by car – on average 45.8 percent drive less than 10 kilometres (one-way commute), another 28.1 percent between 10 and 25 kilometres and 16.2 percent over 25 kilometres. The Golf blue-e-motion can also handle the driving ranges typically covered by many service providers. In short-distance driving, the zero-emissions Golf represents a sustainable solution for private users as well.

Energy-conscious driving with impressive performance

More noticeably than on today’s modern petrol or diesel engines, the maximum range of an electric car is severely reduced when its maximum power is demanded frequently. Therefore, the 135 km/h fast and very aerodynamic Golf blue-e-motion (Cd value: 0.295) provides ample power reserves to move the car swiftly while consuming less energy, and it can even coast or “sail” as it is called in the professional jargon. “Sailing” occurs whenever the driver – adopting an anticipatory style of driving releases the gas pedal, or rather the electric pedal. The motor is then controlled to the zero-torque curve so that the car can coast with the least possible drag. In this mode of driving, the Golf blue-e-motion even recovers kinetically generated energy by battery regeneration. The end result is that the zero-emissions Golf has enough performance potential to quickly execute manoeuvres such as passing. An index of the car’s very good dynamic qualities is its time for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h: 11.8 seconds.

Lithium-ion battery

The concept car’s 30 battery modules consisting of 180 lithium-ion cells (energy capacity: 26.5 kWh) were installed in spaces adapted to the vehicle architecture. They can be found in the floor of the bootspace (fully usable cargo capacity: 275 litres), under the rear bench seat and in the centre tunnel of the underbody (between the front seats). A separate air cooling system ensures a constant thermal environment in the battery compartment. The battery modules weigh a total of 315 kilograms.

Instruments tailored to electric driving

The driver can see how much energy is being demanded by the “electric pedal” at any given moment on the kW gauge (replaces the classic tachometre); drivers strive to keep the kW reading as low as possible practically intuitively. A range indicator is also integrated in this round instrument. The speedometer, located on the right side as usual, integrates another small gauge that provides information on the battery charge state.

Individual choices in battery regeneration

A new feature is the display of regeneration intensity in the multifunction display between the kW instrument and the speedometer. In battery regeneration, the driver has the option of pre-setting the braking energy recovery strategy over four stages (D to D3) via the automatic gearshift lever or gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. In the lowest stage (D), the car “sails” as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the “electric pedal” – now the Golf blue-e-motion moves with very low drag; it is only “slowed” by the rolling resistance of the tyres and air resistance. In the D3 stage, or B for braking, on the other hand, the maximum amount of kinetic energy is recovered and fed to the battery. In addition, the electrical energy consumption of the automatic climate control unit and its blower can be called up in the multifunction display.

Three driving profiles control comfort, dynamics and range

In addition, an active driving profile can be set; this lets the driver select priorities in advance: between maximum range, maximum comfort and maximum dynamics. The selected profile then pre-configures the power of the electric motor, air conditioning control, maximum speed and battery regeneration strategy.

The Golf blue-e-motion offers the three profiles “Normal,” “Comfort+” and “Range+.” In the “Comfort+” profile, the full 85 kW of power is available; in this mode the Golf blue-e-motion can attain the specified top speed of 135 km/h. When the driver activates the “Normal” mode, power is reduced to 65 kW and top speed is lowered to 115 km/h. In the “Range+” mode the engine controller limits power to 50 kW; in this case, the car can reach a maximum speed of 105 km/h. At the same time, the air conditioning system is completely deactivated. The selected profile is shown in the multifunction display.

Full charging via the VW logo

The Golf blue-e-motion is charged via a plug connector behind the folding VW logo on the radiator grille. A pictogram of a plug connector in the multifunction display indicates that the charging cable is correctly inserted and locked. During active charging an LED also flashes in the charge state indicator, and the charge level shown in the indicator is continually updated.

Packaging of the drive system

All key primary and secondary drive components were integrated in the front engine compartment. In arriving at this design, developers applied experience they had gained in numerous design studies. As in the Up! blue-e-motion concept car, for example, an integral form of electric drive is used in the Golf blue-e-motion. Core components of the integral drive are the lightweight 80 kg electric motor together with a transmission and differential. Energy management is handled by a high-voltage pulse-controlled inverter that is integrated in the compact integral drive along with the 12 Volt electrical system’s DC/DC converter and charging module. The entire unit is relatively light and compact; the five-door and five-seat Golf blue-e-motion weighs just 205 kg more than a comparable Golf BlueMotion TDI with DSG – despite the fact that electric car batteries are known to be heavy and weigh 1,545 kg in the concept car. Yet, the car’s safety properties are identical.

Volkwagen Amarok Picks Up Inaugural International Pick-Up Award

The new Volkswagen Amarok has been honoured with the International Pick-up Award 2011.

The accolade, awarded for the first time this year, was judged by the highly regarded panel, representing 23 countries, that elects the prestigious International Van of the Year awards.

During the judging process, the Amarok was praised by the jury for its ‘effortless off-road abilities’, while its capacity on-road was judged to be the best against all other competitors. The jury was also impressed by the Amarok’s interior, in particular, the layout and generous space for both front and rear passengers in the double-cab cabin.

On the Amarok’s success, the jury commented: ‘The new Volkswagen Amarok distinguishes itself by fantastic driving qualities, both on- and off-road. It sets new standards in the pick-up category in respect to load capacity, interior room, comfort, ergonomics and fuel consumption.’

Set for launch in the Australia in March 2011, the Amarok boasts the largest load dimensions in its class with a load area of 2.52 m² (1,555 mm long, 1,620 mm wide, with width between wheel arches of 1,222 mm), a maximum payload capacity of 1,057 kg and maximum towing limit of 2.8 tonnes.

All models also feature advanced technology and safety systems including EDL (Electronic Differential Lock), ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) with Hill Hold Assist, Hill Descent Assist and off-road ABS designed to significantly shorten stopping distances on loose surfaces.

Volkswagen Group Australia as part of this year’s Australian International Motor Show launched its global strategy “Think Blue” to the Australian public on Friday, 15 October. Over 1,000 people have participated in the activity over the weekend already.

Think Blue embodies Volkswagen’s goal of creating environmentally friendly products and solutions, communicating and encouraging better environmental behaviour and getting involved in initiatives that contribute to a sustainable future.

In order to encourage the Australian public to embrace Think Blue and the associated ways of thinking, two Think Blue photo booths have been located at Darling Harbour from 15 to 24 October. They are located at Druitt Landing and the Cockle Bay Wharf side of Pyrmont Bridge.

In order to have a photo taken, participants need to sit on the attached bike and pedal for approximately 1.5 minutes in order to generate enough energy for a photo. Once this process is complete, they step into the photo booth to have the photo taken by using the energy generated personally on the bike. Shortly after the personal photo will be ready to take away.

Thanks to clever downsizing of the twincharged 1.4-litre TSI engine (turbo plus supercharging) and the extremely efficient 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) as standard equipment, the development team was able to reduce combined fuel consumption to 6.11/100km. That is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 142g/km. By comparison: Its direct predecessor in terms of power – equipped with a 1.8-litre turbo engine − consumed 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 190g/km CO2). This means that the new car is 24 percent more fuel efficient.

This economy contrasts with highly dynamic driving performance:
The light 1,189 kilogram Volkswagen sports car accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds. These figures, 6.9 seconds, 6.1 litres are sports car performance parameters of a sustainable kind.

Power is transferred to the front wheels via DSG as standard equipment. An electronic transverse differential lock (XDL) reduces the tendency to understeer and improves handling especially in quick driving through curves.

Like all versions of the model series, the Polo GTI also comes equipped with the standard ESP electronic stabilization programme including Hill Start Assist. In addition, the car’s extensive safety features consist of a highly effective airbag network, including front, front side and curtain airbags, belt tensioners, belt tension limiters plus belt warning, head restraints designed to avoid whiplash trauma (each in front) and three rear head restraints.

In addition, convenience features include electro-hydraulic power steering, electric windows, remote central locking, boot space lighting and tie-down eyes, driver seat height adjustment, makeup mirror in the sun visors and green tinted insulated glass. The GTI will be the first Polo to be available with bi-xenon headlights with cornering lights, LED daytime running lights and corner marker lights. Naturally, GTI-specific features are always standard too, such as the sport seat system and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Volkswagen Eos Receives Engine Update

With the arrival of the new model year 2011, the Volkswagen Eos will be treated to an engine upgrade, which sees the Eos deliver the same power output as the acclaimed Golf GTI.

With the arrival of the MY11 Eos, it now features the 2.0 litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a power 155kW output, which allows the vehicle to accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds. Maximum torque – 280 Nm – is delivered between 1,700 and 5,200 rpm, an exceptionally wide range to provide excellent in-gear performance and keen throttle response. The Eos is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG transmission. Emissions of CO2 are 173 g/km (DSG: 184 g/km) and fuel consumption is just 7.4L/100km (DSG: 7.9 L/100km).

The Eos’s TSI engine offers new features including modified pistons and piston rings, new induction system and a high-pressure fuel pump. This engine was designed for Euro V compliance, lower CO2 emissions, fuel efficiency, ease of servicing and “packaging”. Packaging means reducing the external dimensions of the engine, plus accessories to allow appropriate under-bonnet space for engine movement, service access and crumple zones.

The Volkswagen Eos is also still available as a 2.0 litre four-cylinder 103kW diesel paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG gearbox. Model Year 2011 also gives the Eos some other enhancements like standard Vienna leather upholstery with heated front seats, new 17” alloy wheels and a range of new exterior colours combined with new chrome grille strips and cherry red tail lights.

Every manual Eos now also comes with standard Hill Start Assist (HSA), which holds the vehicle when the foot brake is released by temporarily locking the brake pressure (for a maximum of 1.5 seconds) to provide comfortable starting-off without rolling back. Hill Start Assist (HSA) operates on inclines greater than 5%.

Pricing remains unchanged with prices from $46,990* for the Eos 103TDI and $48,990* for the Eos 155TSI.

Now, at the Mondial de l’Auto mobile in Paris (October 2-17), Volkswagen is presenting the world premiere of an entirely new Passat – as a sedan and a wagon car simultaneously. The seventh generation of this bestseller will be available in initial European markets starting as soon as mid - November.

The fifth and sixth Passat generations had already left conventional class boundaries behind and bridged a path to the next higher segment with their high-end features. The seventh generation Passat emphatically continues this trend. A completely new styling configuration was created. It simultaneously guides the Passat’s independent design into the future. Without leaving the mid-class in terms of pricing, the Passat approaches the top segments even more powerfully with its upgraded comfort, convenience, quality and safety properties as well as in its assistance systems.

Up to 18 percent improved fuel economy: As is usual for a Volkswagen, the new Passat also sets standards in sustainability. All engines are more fuel efficient – up to18 percent more. The “smallest” and yet torque-strong turbodiesel now consumes just 4.2 * l/100 km; that is equivalent to 109* g/km CO2. Meanwhile, downsizing and technologies such as the Stop/Start system contribute to extraordinary fuel efficiency in the petrol-powered versions.

New safety features: Volkswagen is making genuine progress in the area of safety. The previous model already attained an impressive five stars in Euro -NCAP crash testing. The new model takes safety to a new level with features such as an automatic City emergency braking function and, on some models, a standard fatigue detection function. The fatigue detection system, which Volkswagen is introducing for the first time in this class, is continually active; it detects reduced driver concentration and warns the driver with an acoustic signal; a visual message also appears in the instrument cluster recommending that the driver should take a break from driving. As a component of the optional automatic adaptive cruise control system, in worst case scenarios the emergency braking function reacts independently at speeds below 30 km/h which can help prevent frontal collisions.

Another new feature on the Passat: the continually active masked main beam headlights known as Dynamic Light Assist – an option offered in conjunction with bi- xenon headlights − enables continual use of the main beam headlights while driving. Via a camera, the system detects oncoming traffic and cars driving ahead and automatically masks only those lighting areas relevant to glare. The results improved illumination of the carriageway in nearly all situations. The Passat is the first car in its class to have this system. For vehicles with conventional halogen headlights, a simpler version of automatic main beam control is available: Light Assist. A camera is also used here, e. g. to detect oncoming traffic. But the system switches over completely between main beam and dipped beam. As soon as there is no more oncoming traffic, the main beam is reactivated.

The XDS electronic transverse differential lock − first introduced on the Golf GT I − improves traction in bend s. Along with Lane Assist (lane keeping assistant), which was also available in the previous model, there will now also be a Side Assist function, which uses flashing LEDs in the door mirrors to call the driver’s attention to vehicles located laterally to the rear or next to the Passat or a vehicle approaching quickly from the rear. A new, direct measuring tyre pressure monitoring system also signals potential loss of tyre pressure − individually for each wheel. The pressures of all tyres may also be displayed in the instrument cluster.

Innovative convenience systems: Other new assistance systems are essentially convenience oriented, and they significantly simplify everyday driving. They include Easy Open: If the new Passat sedan is equipped with Keyless Access (automatic locking and engine starting system), a specific foot motion behind the vehicle is sufficient to cause the boo t lid to open. Anyone who has stood next to a car with both hands full knows know helpful a function like Easy Open can be. Naturally, the boot lid only opens for someone who is carrying the proper RF identification fob for the Passat. The human-machine interface here is a sensor located in the bumper area.

Also new in the Passat: The rear seat system that can be unlatched from the bootspace and side windows in noise-dampening compound safety glass. Park Assist II will no w also be offered on the Passat; this system not only can steer into par king spaces parallel to the carriage way; it can also find its way into parking spaces perpendicular to it. Last but not least, the Passat’s RNS 510 navigation system detects speed limit signs by camera and sends them to the touch screen in the centre console.

Three of the world’s most renowned German badges – Volkswagen, GTI and adidas – will for the first time meld to form a combined product: the Golf GTI adidas. Volkswagen is presenting the most exclusive Golf GTI of the current generation in an Australian premiere at this year’s Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. The Golf GTI adidas follows in the mould of the Golf Pirelli GTI.

The new Golf GTI adidas can be recognized by a special alloy wheel design. In this case, it is the 18-inch “Serron” wheel, named after a Finnish race course. The wheel exhibits five machine-polished U-shaped dual spokes; the areas between the spokes are painted in high-sheen black.

In addition, the Golf GTI adidas is identified on its exterior by standard bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and dark tinted tail light clusters with LED technology. Special adidas badges on the B-pillars also identify this car as a special model.

Inside, the black-red sport seat system was customised in the joint venture with adidas. Its inner seat panels consist of fabric in GTI-adidas design and sport the matching logo as well; lateral seat supports are upholstered in Vienna leather; interior designers executed the double cap seam of the head restraints in “Flash Red”.

On the backs of the front seats, which are heated and height-adjustable, there are storage pockets for stowing smaller items and magazines, while the folding backrest of the rear seats is equipped with a combined centre armrest and pass-through to the boot space.

Colour-contrasting decorative door inlays (front), special interior accents in aluminium, fabric floor mats with decorative borders and a gearshift grip in the golf ball design of the first generation GTI, complete the customised features of the GTI adidas. Volkswagen Transporter And Multivan Now Available With 4MOTION

The Volkswagen Transporter and Multivan can now be ordered with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The latest generation of the multi-disc clutch with its optimised friction properties sets new standards in terms of traction, safety, comfort and efficiency. 4MOTION is now available in conjunction with the most powerful TDI engine (132 kW) and can also be combined with the 7-speed DSG gearbox for the first time.

4MOTION not only offers decisive traction benefits, but also permits higher cornering speeds, thereby enhancing both safety and driving enjoyment – no matter what the road conditions.

The latest generation of the frictionally-optimised multi-plate clutch sets standards in terms of traction, safety, comfort and economy. In contrast to the mechanically controlled Haldex2 module which was previously fitted, the new 4MOTION comes equipped with an electronic control system. Within the multi-plate clutch, the oil pressure which is responsible for distributing torque to the rear wheels is no longer built up due to the difference in speed between the front and rear axles, but is generated by an electronic pump, which supplies a pressure of 30 bar to an oil pressure reservoir. At the same time, the oil pressure reservoir enables the electronic pump to be temporarily shut-off, thereby reducing fuel consumption. Via an electronically controlled valve, this reservoir is in turn able to pass the retained pressure on to the clutch plates – precisely and continuously varying the power transmitted to the rear wheels with the pressure level. In extreme cases, up to 100 percent of the torque can actually be distributed to the rear axle. The Haldex clutch is driven via the propeller shaft.

The clutch itself implements the control electronics' commands extremely quickly. This not only improves traction over difficult terrain and on slippery surfaces, but also generally enhances active safety. If the wheel sensors register slip at the front axle, for example, drive torque is forwarded to the rear axle even before understeering is able to occur. The control electronics take a total of almost 40 different signals into consideration, including the steering angle, yaw rates, accelerator pedal position and engine speed. The loss of traction at individual wheels is prevented by the electronic differential lock EDL by means of active brake intervention. However, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also offers an optional, mechanical rear axle differential lock for the 4MOTION system; this additionally ensures maximum traction during off-road use. Now, when the rear interwheel differential lock is engaged, the further developed ESP system is no longer shut-down.

Volkswagen's four-wheel drive Transporter and people mover has been a firm part of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle product range for 25 years. Initially limited to one engine and type of gearbox, it is now possible to combine the four-wheel drive version with an increasing number of equipment features.

Jory Linscott from Jackson Motor Company (Tasmania) and Chanh Trinh from McGrath Volkswagen Liverpool (New South Wales) were last night awarded at a gala dinner as Volkswagen Group Australia’s best Service Advisor and Technician of the Year respectively. This was the second time Jory Linscott has taken the top spot in the National Service Quality Championships, while Chanh Trinh finally collected the highest award after running second for two years.

The Service Quality Championships are an opportunity for Volkswagen’s best technicians and service advisors to show their skills and to be recognised by the company. The aim of the Qualification World Championship is to further expand the level of service quality offered by Volkswagen aftersales.

The two finalists received their awards from Phil Murray, General Manager Service and Volkswagen Group Australia’s Managing Director, Anke Koeckler. In a speech to the finalists Ms Koeckler highlighted the great skills and ability shown by the contestants.

“I am impressed by the standard of skills shown in this competition and proud to have Jory and Chanh representing Australia in the international finals later this year. For the first time, the Volkswagen Group sold more than 4 million vehicles in the period from January to July. 4.16 (January - July 2009: 3.65; +13.7 percent)* million vehicles were delivered to customers during the first seven months of the current year. As a result, Europe’s largest automaker continues to outperform the overall market (+13.4 percent). This also applies for the majority of the Group’s volume brands. In July, the Volkswagen Group delivered 572,200 (556,200; +2.9 percent)** vehicles worldwide.

“After a very successful first six months we got off to a good start in the second half of the year. Over the coming months we will continue on our growth path with our model range and will perform better than the competition. However, this will be a challenge, given an operating environment that is again becoming difficult. Now that incentive programs have come to an end, the global automotive market is expected to decline in the second half of the year. There will not be a return to the high pre-crisis levels this year,” Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said on Friday.

Higher than average development on almost all major markets

The Volkswagen Group again reported delivery figures that outperformed the market, in some cases quite significantly, on almost all major markets. In China deliveries in the first seven months grew 42.2 percent to 1.11 (0.78) million. For the entire Asia/Pacific region Volkswagen reported a growth rate of 42.3 percent with deliveries totaling 1.23 (0.86) million vehicles. The highest percentage increase was 121 percent, and was once again recorded on the Indian market with 21,300 (9,700) units handed over.

In Europe the Group delivered a total of 2.0 (1.95) million vehicles to customers, corresponding to a rise of 2.2 percent, while the overall market contracted by 1.8 percent. In Western Europe (excluding Germany) Volkswagen reported growth of 18.4 percent (overall market +9.6 percent) to 1.15 (0.97) million vehicles. Developments on the German market remain very subdued. The continuing weak market, strongly influenced by the effects of the scrapping premium last year, contracted by 29 percent between January and July. The Volkswagen Group performed better, delivering 606,200 (745,600; -18.7 percent) vehicles.

In South America deliveries for the period January to July grew to 483,300 (472,200; +2.3 percent) vehicles. In North America, 309,200 (263,000; +17.6 percent) vehicles were delivered to customers, with the USA accounting for 207,100 (162,900; +27.1 percent).

Volume brands report strong growth

Both the Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands again performed very well: The core brand delivered 2.62 (2.30) million passenger cars during the period January to July, an increase of 14.0 percent. Apart from the Golf family and the Tiguan, demand in China for the very successful Lavida, Passat Lingyu, Jetta and New Bora models was particularly high. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles reported a rise of 12.9 percent during the first seven months to 236,600 (209,500) units.

Deliveries at Audi ran at 646,300 (550,700) vehicles, 17.4 percent up on the prior-year period. China (+62.5 percent) and the USA (+27.1 percent) reached new delivery records.

Škoda delivered 437,300 (385,500; +13.4 percent) vehicles. The brand enjoyed particularly strong growth in China, the UK, Spain and India as well as on its home market of the Czech Republic.

SEAT delivered 211,500 (206,700; +2.3 percent) vehicles. The situation on the home market of Spain was very gratifying with 65,200 (50,000) vehicles delivered, representing a 30.5 percent rise on the prior-year period.

New Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 Passes Endurance Test With Flying Colours

An evolution model that is as tough as nails: the Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 has completed three weeks of testing in Spain and Morocco with extreme success. The successor of the diesel prototype from the model range 2 that had been successful twice in the legendary Dakar Rally handled the more than double “Dakar” distance without any technical problems and thus proved to be well prepared to tackle the remainder of the programme before the Dakar Rally’s start on 01 January 2011 in Buenos Aires and the world’s toughest desert rally itself. On 20 August the “RT3” will be presented to the public for the first time in “Dakar” trim in Trier (Germany). From 11 to 18 September it will make its competitive debut at the Silk Way Rally through Russia that starts in St. Petersburg and finishes in Sochi.

“The Race Touareg 3 tests were more than positive,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen, who was on location to get a personal impression of the first kilometres of the updated vehicle. “A direct comparison between the ‘RT2’ and the ‘RT3’ showed that the new car has made a step forwards in many areas. Its reliability was immediately impressive. Our plan had been to complete long runs of one and a half of the ‘Dakar’ distance – but in the end we covered more than twice the number of test kilometers thanks to the vehicle’s stability and the very good job done by the drivers and the team.”

Seasoned teams: the four “Dakar” driver pairings

All four “Dakar” duos participated in the tests as driver/co-driver combinations: Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E), who decided the past 2010 Dakar Rally in their favour with Volkswagen, Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D), the “Dakar” runners-up in January 2010, Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D), the “Dakar” winners in the Race Touareg 2 in January 2009, and Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA), who completed a one-twin for Volkswagen as the overall runners-up in 2009.

Set-up in Spain, performance comparison and endurance test in Morocco

At the beginning of the extensive tests set-up runs in Spain were on the agenda. Then the Volkswagen “Dakar” team tested the new Race Touareg 3 in direct comparison with its predecessor in the region around Mahmid, Morocco, before moving on to the Erfoud test centre for two weeks of long runs. The new, attractive aerodynamics of the Race Touareg 3, which improves air flow with more efficient flow directed towards the inter-cooling and water cooling systems, proved its viability. The new flow of cooling air was thoroughly tested around Mahmid where temperatures reach 48 °C in the shade, which equates to the heat that prevails at the “Dakar”.

The long runs around Erfoud were focused on testing in conditions resembling the “Dakar” as closely as possible. A 370-kilometre loop that was covered twice per day included dunes with vegetation and a large share of off-road tracks with river bed crossings. Sections with hard soil were on the agenda as well as soft sand passages. In total, the Race Touareg 3 completed almost 10,000 kilometres of simulated special stages. This equates to the distance of an entire Formula 1 season and more than twice the special stage distance at the legendary Dakar Rally.

The Volkswagen Golf has again been recognised as the best in its class with a pair of wins in hotly contested categories at the annual Auto Express New Car Awards.

Judged by the editorial team at Auto Express, the awards recognise the best cars on sale today. Both new and existing models are eligible with the best vehicles in every class being selected for an award.

For the second year in a row, the Golf has been awarded the title of ‘Best Compact Family Car’ by the judges.

Auto Express editor in chief David Johns said: ‘With its classy looks, high-quality cabin and executive car refinement, the Volkswagen still sets the standard. Better still, it’s great to drive, excellent value and has a brilliant range of engines – including innovative turbocharged TSI petrol units.’

The Golf, now in its sixth generation, has accounted for over 27 million sales worldwide since it was launched in 1974 making it the most popular model Volkswagen has ever produced.

The second award of the night was won by another icon. Despite 33 years having passed since the Golf GTI was launched, the car that defines the hot hatch remains the benchmark in its class.

The Golf GTI retained the ‘Best Hot Hatch’ award despite fierce competition from new models. David Johns said: ‘There are rivals that are faster and more eye-catching, but few can match the Golf’s all-round ability and appeal.

‘Its smooth 2.0-litre engine delivers perfectly judged performance, while its composed chassis mixes comfort and composure in equal measure. Plus, it comes in three and five-door bodystyles, and with manual and twin-clutch DSG transmissions.’

The Auto Express award adds to the list of accolades claimed by the Golf both locally and overseas including the World Car of the Year, 2009 Wheels Car of the Year, Australia’s Best Car Award, the 2009 Carsguide Car of the Year and 2009 DRIVE Car of the Year award.

Volkswagen Group Reports New Delivery Record For First Half Year

The Volkswagen Group delivered more vehicles than originally expected during the first half of 2010. In total, 3.58 (January to June 2009: 3.10)* million vehicles were sold, an increase of about 16 percent. In June, 644,600 (609,900; +5.7 percent) customers purchased a vehicle from the Group.

“We are very pleased with deliveries for the first half year. Our innovative and environmentally-friendly model range is well received by customers. We are also optimistic as regards the full year and expect to perform better than the overall market,” Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said on Friday. “However, the results of the first half year cannot be projected for the full year. The economic situation remains uncertain,” Klingler added.

Group reports growth on all major automotive markets

The Volkswagen Group posted an appreciable 45.7 percent rise in deliveries in China in the first six months, its largest market, with the number of vehicles increasing to 950,300 (652,200). Growth rates for the Volkswagen Lavida and New Bora, the Audi Q5 and the Škoda Fabia were particularly high. In India, deliveries again doubled to 17,400 (8,200; +112.9 percent). Deliveries in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole grew 45.2 percent during the first half year.

The Group also enjoyed continued growth in the USA. 175,300 (135,800; +29.2 percent) vehicles were delivered from January to June. In Europe, Volkswagen reported growth of 4.7 percent. In total, 1.74 (1.66) million passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were sold in this region. The Company again recorded noticeable increases on markets in Western Europe: 151,100 (107,300; +40.8 percent) vehicles were delivered in Spain and 209,500 (158,800; +31.9 percent) in the UK.

In Germany, the downturn on the overall market resulting from the effects of last year’s scrapping premium continued as expected (-28.7 percent). Nevertheless, the Volkswagen Group performed better than the overall market, delivering 531,300 (632,000; -15.9 percent) units.

All volume brands report vigorous growth

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand sold 2.26 (1.95) million units worldwide during the first six months, deliveries therefore growing 16.2 percent. Volkswagen recorded its strongest growth in the Asia-Pacific region with a rise of 40.6 percent. Apart from the models designed specifically for the Chinese market, the Polo and the Tiguan were particularly popular with customers.

Audi delivered 554,900 (465,800; +19.1 percent) vehicles worldwide and is therefore on course for a new delivery record for the full year. Business in European markets, the USA and in China in particular developed better than expected. Growth was strongest in the South America region, where deliveries increased by 79.5 percent. The A4/A5 Cabriolet and the Q5 were among the bestselling models.

Škoda delivered 378,700 (329,600; +14.9 percent) vehicles worldwide during the period January to June. The brand enjoyed especially strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region, where deliveries rose by 78.9 percent.

During the first half year, the Spanish brand SEAT delivered 181,800 (173,400; +4.9 percent) vehicles worldwide. Demand was particularly strong on the brand’s home market of Spain, where SEAT delivered a total of 56,900 (39,700; +43.2 percent) vehicles.

New design, proven technology: Volkswagen is developing an evolution model of the Race Touareg that has been victorious twice in a row for the 2011 Dakar Rally in South America. In January 2011 the Wolfsburg-based car manufacturer will field four Race Tourareg 3 vehicles with fundamentally updated aerodynamics at the desert classic through Argentina and Chile. The cross-country rally vehicle follows the latest production model change and picks up concrete characteristics of the avant-garde shape of the Touareg II. As a result, the new Race Touareg incorporates its outstanding vehicle dynamics qualities in an even more athletic outer skin than before, with proven and extremely successful technology underneath: the TDI engine with an approximate power output of 300 hp as well as the suspension and chassis basically remain untouched.

Evolution in steps: Race Touareg 3 with a new face

Newly designed and updated: the Race Touareg 3 is by no means a completely new development. It continues to be based on the basic engineering design of the Race Touareg 2 that was introduced in 2005. Since then the cross-country rally prototype with its innovative TDI engine has gone through an evolution in the area of the powertrain and suspension across several steps. In the step towards the Race Touareg 3 the main focus is on the new outer skin.

Tests with the Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 in the deserts of Morocco at the end of July will literally ring in the hot phase of the development programme. The extensive tests including the simulation of several rally distances will be followed by the official unveiling of the vehicle in August. In autumn the Race Touareg 3 will have its baptism of fire in competition with others: the Silk Way Rally through Russia which starts in St. Petersburg and ends in Sochi (11–18 September 2010) is regarded as a serious dress rehearsal for the legendary Dakar Rally (01–16 January 2011).

The much sought-after ‘Engine of the Year Award’ has been won by Volkswagen – the tenth time already that the Group has taken the cherished trophy back to Wolfsburg. Entered in the competition this year was Volkswagen’s new 1.4 TSI engine and it won not only in the 1 to 1.4-litre category, but also took the overall award as ‘International Engine of the Year’.

There to accept the prize at the ceremony in Stuttgart on 23 June was Dr. Rüdiger Szengel, Head of Volkswagen Petrol Engine Development. “I and the entire Volkswagen development team are extremely proud to receive this major international prize in the overall category for the second year in succession for the 1.4 twincharger,” said Dr. Szengel at the awards ceremony yesterday. “The combination of compressor and turbo-charging provides an excellent basis for combining driving pleasure and low fuel consumption - all achieved with a relatively small engine capacity of 1.4 litres,” he added.

The data in detail: The Golf R sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. The Golf R performs even better when shifted with the optional direct shift gearbox (DSG): It leaves the 100-km/h mark behind it in a sensational 5.7 seconds. The best data: While the retired Golf R32 processed 10.9 litres fuel per 100 kilometres, the new Golf R only needs 8.7 litres. This translates to a 1.2 litre better fuel efficiency than the previous model. Accordingly, CO2 emissions are reduced from 259 to 201 g/km (manual) and for the automatically shifted Golf R DSG, CO2 emissions are as low as 197 g/km.

The enormous efficiency gain of the new Golf R is not some magic trick rather it is the result of intelligent downsizing. Its legendary predecessor generated its power from a displacement of 3.2 litres and six cylinders. In the new model, however this is accomplished with four cylinders and 2.0 litres of displacement, which equals a highly advanced direct injection petrol engine with turbo-charging (TSI). Most noticeable at the fuel pump and on the winding mountain road, this high-tech alliance is superior to a classic six cylinder with multi-point injection.

Proving that even the sound of a four cylinder can leave a strong impression are the fifth and sixth generations of the Golf GTI, also powered by a four cylinder TSI. And the Golf R − and the chrome dual tailpipes of its sound-optimized exhaust system − display a significantly broader "sound spectrum".

The TSI's torque characteristic is just as impressive. By comparison, the six cylinder of the previous model developed a maximum torque of 320 Newton-metres at 2,500 rpm. That too was remarkably good however the turbo four-cylinder direct injection engine of the new Golf R, on the other hand, transfers 330 Newton-metres torque at 2,400 rpm and can maintain this peak value up to 5,200 rpm. This means that the new Golf R truly delivers a fascinatingly high level of fundamental dynamic performance.

Volkswagen brings the new Golf GTD to market

The Golf model lineup has been growing in leaps and bounds: At the end of 2008, the sixth generation of the bestseller was launched in Europe. Shortly thereafter, in early 2009, the new Golf arrived in Australia. Then, the current Golf GTI was vaulted to centre stage, closely followed by the new Golf Wagon. And now the lineup continues: with the new Golf GTD. Its 125 kW power level makes it the highest-performance production Golf with a diesel engine today. The code letters GTD have revolutionized the diesel market with its turbocharged diesel engine; a diesel that is not only economical but exceedingly sporty too.

• GTD key performance data: The new Golf GTD is powered by a highly advanced common rail TDI engine with a torque of 350 Newton-metre, fuel efficiency of 5.5 litres and CO2 emissions of 145 g/km. The GTD sprints from 0km/h to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds.

• GTD affinities: The Golf GTD speaks to all diesel fans who value a maximum in dynamic performance. That is why the GTD shows such a clear affinity to the new Golf GTI (155 kW). While the GTI is in a league of its own with an efficient TSI engine that offers the performance of far more expensive sports cars, the Golf GTD is making its debut with phenomenal fuel economy and a range of approx. 1,000 kilometres (with a 55 litre fuel tank).

• GTD high tech: The car’s technical ingredients are among the most advanced that the market has to offer. Naturally, the focal point of this high-tech composition is the TDI engine. Its specific torque is 176.4 Newton-metre per litre engine displacement. In practically any driving situation, the 16-valve four-cylinder engine offers the power of a sports car engine with six cylinders. Just as pioneering is the six-speed DSG gearbox from Volkswagen: Just as on the Golf GTI, on the Golf GTD too there will be an optional dual clutch transmission in place. The Golf GTD with DSG also accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and consumes just 5.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres on average (152/km CO2).

• GTD exterior: The car’s visual appearance is impressive too. The GTD – equipped with a chassis lowered by 15 millimetres, 17-inch alloy wheels and 225 section tyres – shows parallels and once again a similarity to the GTI in terms of its styling and features. Consider the front end, for example: Among the hallmarks of the GTD and GTI are their bumper designs with standard front fog lights in a typical vertical layout. Their headlights and radiator grilles share the same construction as well. In the case of the GTD, the horizontal stripes in the radiator grille – typical of the GTI – are styled in chrome. At the rear, the turbo-diesel also has a diffuser, but it is modified: The diesel Golf can be recognized by the twin chrome tailpipes of its exhaust system in the diffuser. The taillights are also smoked.

• GTD interior: The car’s interior follows Volkswagen’s GT philosophy as well. And this means ergonomics in its purest form, supplemented by features tailored to the Golf GTD. The “top sport seats” – the same as the ones used in the Golf GTI – define a higher standard. Their long-distance touring and racing properties are legendary, as is their styling. In contrast to the GTI, the black sport seats of the GTD are complemented by a light grey colour in the diamond stripe pattern instead of red. Another highlight is the three-spoke leather sport steering wheel. And, as on the steering wheel, the parking brake grip and gearshift surround are also finished in leather. The instrument and door trim areas are treated with “Black Stripe” gloss-black accents.

• GTD is fully equipped: Furthermore, Golf GTD features include details such as chrome bezels for various switches, a black roofliner and black roof pillar trim, automatic climate control, Multi-Functional Display (MFD Plus) trip computer, centre armrests and the RCD 510 radio system. Standard features also include ESP with braking assistant, as well as seven airbags, including a knee airbag on the driver’s side.

The Volkswagen Group and Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A. (IDG), Turin, are to intensify their successful cooperation, putting it on a new footing. This was announced by both companies at a joint press conference in Turin on Tuesday. The Volkswagen Group will take a 90.1 percent stake in IDG, including the brand name rights and patents. The shares are being acquired by AUDI's Italian subsidiary Lamborghini Holding S.p.A. The remaining shares will stay in the possession of the present owner family Giugiaro.

“With this shareholding in Italdesign, we are participating in one of the most renowned design and development companies with one of the richest traditions in the automobile industry. Italdesign is the flagship for creative Italian automobile design and has been instrumental in shaping the face of the automobile industry worldwide. As the creator of the Golf I, Giorgetto Giugiaro laid a new foundation for Volkswagen design in the 1970s,” Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, commented in Turin.

The Volkswagen Group has enjoyed successful cooperation with IDG for many decades. Giugiaro made a name for himself not only with the Golf I, but also with concepts for important models such as the first Volkswagen Passat, Scirocco or the Audi 80. A comprehensive development framework agreement was concluded in 2008. Volkswagen and IDG are also collaborating closely on ongoing projects such as the planned Volkswagen Up! model family. Implementation of the agreement is also subject to the standard approval by the relevant authorities.

IDG was founded in Turin by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Aldo Mantovani in 1968. Both founders are considered pioneers of modern Italian automobile design. Italdesign has also acquired a reputation worldwide as a highly-competent development centre. Today, the company generates sales of over €100 million and has a workforce of some 800 employees.
