The Bush Busser - '62 Panel Retrieval

This is an interesting story. I found out about this bus when the owner, John, walked up to me at a petrol station where I was refueling my '67 Panel and said literally "I've got a Kombi the same as yours....do you want it?" From there it's been an interesting ride. After further examination it turns out this bus was in an accident and a '64 rear end was welded on including the hatch. The indicators were altered to "fish eyes" to match the back. But the rust is minimal. So watch the thrills and spills. John had to use a bulldozer to clear a path out of the forest that had grown up around it in the 8-9 years it sat on his farm. Frankly I'm surprised it got out at all when I look back at this!

My right foot, eh, Steve? Well it's probably been on the edge of going for a while then. Sunday night just happened to be a really cold snap. The O-ring on the bypass pipe of my Landy's water pump froze and cracked after it was left out in the cold one night and it dumped a LOT of coolant. Same cause, different liquid, but the leak was just as dramatic.
For the record, I found some more rust. The cargo floor looks like it'll need replacing, at least the section near the door. It's stored up moisture under the rubber mat. I need to clean it out to see the full damage. But that's still small potatoes.
58k may be it's OG miles but I don't think so. It travelled the best part of Oz with 2 sisters and they traded it on when it put a rod through the case. John towed it up there himself to use as a shed.

Andy great stuff, welcome to the world of bus hunting and gathering....loved the vid ....this bus is a gem ...very very solid....ps the rock didnt cause the filter to sh*t itself but your big right foot reving the engines ring hole when its below zero in the mornings did.The milelage on the speedo is 58k and I belive its original and that is about the time a 1200cc engine breaks its poo valve after pushing a bus around........ever ask yourself how the kombi got there in the first place ??? cheers steve

Of all the stuff I've done over the past few years to retrieve Kombis I'd have to say I was the person who did the least work on this one. Between John, the owner, who carved a trail, sorted the tyres and made a bar to pull it out, Goulburn Tilt Tray Services who made the transport home inexpensive and effortless, and Steve Muller, who by the grace of God was in Canberra yesterday and could fix the damage to my '67, this was well and truly a team effort by people who are all experts at their job. But yes, I'm very happy.
