Volks Culture

Stephen Muller and Mick Percy have recently contacted me about racing 36hp motored Volkswagens in land speed racing. Since Austrailia enjoys the presence of Lake Gairdner, a massive dry salt lake that is just like the Bonneville Salt Flats, VW LSR competition is very much possible. I would like to invite all VW folks who might have an interest in this type of racing to contact me via the email address at www.burlyb.com , home of the 36hp Challenge.

Even better, get in touch with the Dry Lakes Racing Austrialia DRLA at http://www.dlra.org.au/ and let them know of your interest. Just this past spring, the first VW to ever run the DRLA Speedweek event, a Super Beetle owned and driven by Mark Hollyoak and powered by a 2180cc VW, posted a top speed over 117 miles per hour. The annual event will next be run between March 8th and 12th in 2010.

My thanx to our friends down under for your interest. Their participation will soon make the 36hp Challenge a truly "international" Volkswagen event.

Till then, may the Speed be with you..................

Hi Ash, hope all's well with you and the blue brick.
Has the salt racing happened yet; I'm keen to go if not?
Cheers now,
Jez
Sorry Jez, been and gone. Here is a few pics taken at the event: http://www.volksculture.com/photo/albums/ratmuller-36hp-world-chall...

The boys did very well, actually breaking a world record with the modified Ghia (127mph+), and unofficially breaking the 36hp world record with 75.1 mph with the 36hp Beetle. The later is not recognised as it was on a GPS timed track, but I think Steve is keener than ever to get back next year and make it official.

How is your gorgeous bus going? Dropped anything else into it yet?

Cheers

A pic of each car is in the current issue of STREET MACHINE, very little info though.
Whose coming to race at World of Speed (9/11/0)

1. Bill Smith from Phoenix will be running his lowlight 56 Ghia coupe with a Stone Stock 36hp engine. Bill is a Mustang restorer with a passion for, and a garage full of Karmann Ghias.

2. Craig & Rose Wilson from Groveland, Cal, located just outside Yosemitie Park, will also be running a 67 Ghia coupe with Britt Grannis's Stone Stock 36 engine taken from the bug he ran last year. Ghias are supposed to be 8 miles per hour faster because of their aerodynamic efficiency. This will be a good test to see how accurate that theory is.

3. Brad Humenny is coming from the great white north with his big blovk VW slalom buggy converted for land speed racing on the salt. It will be the first street buggy to ever have competed at Bonneville.

4. Juan Cole, better known for his Beetle Ball adventures, is bringing Herbie to run the Stone Stock class and try and dethrone the Beaver Geezer boys.

5. Evergreen, Colorados, David Manobla will be in his Okrasa motored Ghia coupe and will make his first pass down Bonnevilles black line this next week.

6. Kim Slaughter is building a NA36 for next year but will take his 58 Bug across the salt this year with a Stone Stock motor that has quite a few miles under it's belt. No tight tolerances their !

7. John Milner is again bringing his Formula V outfitted with a big block VW and dual Webers. He even has a spare motor should the unthinkable happen. Both have been on the dyno so this should run good.

8 & 9 & 10. Dave and Molly McCoombs are coming up from Tustin in So Cal to try their hand in the Challenge.

They will be running a Tom Bruch built DSS 1582cc engine that Tom will also drive once Dave has completed his runs. Both are Stage 4 cancer survivors so you could say they will be 'Running for the Cure' !

11. Britt Grannis is bringing his RED 67 Ghia coupe equipped with Richard Troys 1500cc Okrasa that has jsut been dynoyed by ACE in Salt Lake City. Hopefully this will put Britt into the "1" Club.

12. Dick Wakefield, with his daughter Kami as the pit crew is coming from Texas to try and be the first ?VW bug to gain entry into the 130 MilePer Hour Club. We wish him the best of luck.

13. Richard Troy who became the fifth "1" Club member last year with his Denzel powered Ghia Coupe will return with many refinements and a solid Dyno tune by ACE to speed him along. His goal, 115 mph plus and he has a good shot at acheiving those speeds.

14. Joe Morris is coming all the way from Indianaplis, Indiana, in hopes of besting the Stone Stock record of 73 mph. He has installed his motor in a slippery Super Beetle to give him that 1CD advantage in cheeting the wind.

15. Matt Guzowski will be piloting his road racing Formula V, complete with a blueprinted and dynotuned 40hp engine(now putting out 58 hp) as required for the classes he competes in at Millers Motor Sports Park and other road race venues around the west.

16. Yoncalla, Oregons Jerry Avis came to the salt last year with a neat looking 36hp trike. This year he returns with 'the Cheetle', a Stone Stock powered full bodied bug outfitted with numerous aerodynamic modifications just to see how fast he can make a stock motor go. He will have to run in the "1" Club because of the changes but his goal is maximum speed and nothing more or less.

17 & 18 & 19. The Blackline Boys are in reality, brothers Justin and Colton along with dad Dan and this year they may attempt record speeds in three (3) classes of 36hp bugs. Last years DSS record motor will run first with a highly modified 28PCI carb in SSS, then convert to a modern dual carb to compete in NA36 (it does not have to be turboed, ya know!) and if the motor is still on one piece, they will put last years car on and try to beat their own record. Hopefully, all three will get a go behind the wheel. They are even talking of heading southeast to Goliad, Texas next spring to see what sea level atmospheric conditions would do for their top speeds.

20. Dick Beith, 'the Speedfather of Volkswagen racing', is returning to race 36hp VW's after fifty years, with the worlds most modified land speed Volkswagen. Dick set the first two VW records in LSR in 60 an 61 and then went on to race Mustangs and during the seventies owned an Indy car that raced the Indianapolis 500 as well as the regular Indy circuit.

21 & 22. Kevin Winder and his dad Jesse will bring both a diesel powered Rabbit Pick-Up and a 'dual engine'

3000cc diesel Streamliner. The streamliner which debuted last year with a new record using a single Rabbit engine is now equipped with two 1500cc Rabbit diesels and a new goal of 200 plus miles per hour. The class record is 199 so these Winder boys have their work cut out for them. Like Dick, they will be racing the long three mile track along with all of the other hot rods and streamliners.

23. Saskatoon up in Canada is also sending down Todd Penn with his 60 Bus. I know the engine will not be stock so it will be interesting to see what top speed he acheives.

24. A surprise last minute entry will be a fellow (name unknown) who is bringing one of Matt Kenneys bugs to race the Challenge. Again, the engine and class are unknown but it is good to see Matt racing in abstentia as he will be driving some Type 181's from the midwest to California. We wish him luck in both endeavors.

Kim Slaughter from northern California will be running an original 80,000 plus miles 58 Bug 36er on the salt outfitted with the new Wolfsburg West 'Okrasa' head and dual carb kit. This will be a good opportunity to see how the WW kit performs on an everyday street car and how it will benefit most of the folks running 36hp engines in their VW's. Watch for results to be posted here and in the Challenge newsmail after World of Speed ends this coming Saturday.

May the Speed be with you...................

Looking forward to seeing some of the times for the 2011 event at Bonneville as I understand the World 36HP Challenge Record may have been upped by a couple of mph to a tick over 75mph. That will take some achieving when the Ratmuller Racing Team hit the salt at Lake Gairdner Soth Australia in March next year.

countrybuggybill

I heard that there might be some interest in our record-breaking, stone stock, 36 hp bug (75.534 mph) . . . This was definitely a budget operation.  We started with a dead, dented, hulk, and ended up with a pretty decent looking little "Herbie".  I did most of the work myself: engine, interior, and paint, with the help of my wife Julia, and son Isaac.  Here are some pictures.  If you have any questions, ask away!

Friends of the Challenge

Below are the top speeds achieved by each of the racers at World of Speed.  I would like to offer a BIG thanx to all of the racers, crews and VW spectators who ventured to Bonneville to be part of the USFRA's 26th annual World of Speed. And thanx to Hot VW's for sending RK Smith to cover this unique VW event and for The Samba's moderator, John Moxon to come all the way from England to be part of our race.

I would also like to offer a sincere debt of gratitude to Wolfsburg West and Tony Moore for his support of the 36hp Challenge and the $1000.00 contingency award they provided to the fastest Wolfsburg West cylinder head equipped record breaker, Bill Hatfield of Harmony, Indiana.

May the Speed be with you..................
